Why did you decide to enrol on the course? I had been employed as a technical author for many years and found the work incredibly boring and monotonous. Copywriting offers a more creative use of my writing skills and provides a greater variety of work. Gaining a qualification in copywriting seemed a logical way to learn about copywriting and gain some credibility. Did you make any contact with the Institute before enrolling? A little bit of background research, nothing major. What was your impression of your course when it arrived? I wasn’t too impressed with the presentation of the course – the homemade looking folders, badly laid out pages etc. The actual content was good though – it taught me what I needed to know. Did you consider any other courses? I saw lots of copywriting courses, but opted for the Institute of Copywriting diploma as it looked like a more thorough course. Ultimately, what do you want to do? I’d like to be a full-time freelance copywriter with plenty of work and the freedom to pick and choose projects (and when I work). The flexibility to be able to work from different locations would also be of great benefit. What might you say to someone who was thinking of enrolling on the course? I’d recommend it, but I’d also recommend that they prepare themselves for a lot of work. The way I went about it was to set up my own business, find copywriting work, and study the course all at the same time. Ultimately, this helped me learn and adapt more quickly as I was able to use ‘real life’ experience in my coursework and vice-versa. Is there anything else you’d like to add? Yes, if anyone who is reading this needs high quality, creative copy, get in touch via www.straygoat.com! I never miss a chance to promote myself!
