Case Studies - Diploma in Garden Design

Christine Fereday, Havant (nr Portsmouth, UK)

Why did you enrol on the course?

To gain further knowledge in what was an absorbing hobby, with the hope that I might be able to be accomplished enough at the end to become a designer, either on a full or part time basis.

Did you make any contact with the Institute before enrolling?

None.

What was your impression of the course when it arrived?

Well organised, presented and well thought out. Everything you needed to get started was there - so no excuses!!

Did you consider any other courses?

Yes, several. English School of Gardening, KLC. Seemed rather expensive for the money - and a little scary!!! This course seemed to cover all topics and was value for money.

Ultimately, what do you want to do?

I'd love to work full time as a designer - if Ive got what it takes and Im sure that the course is designed to develop those that have or weed out (sorry no pun intended) those that dont have the skill.

How are you progressing with your course?

Not as fast as I would like as I work full time, play in a guitar orchestra and have to fit the diploma in between!!! Roughly one third of the way so on target at one module a month.

What might you say to someone who was thinking of enrolling on the course?

Be prepared for some hard work, self motivation and deep thinking. You will need to be very resourceful - good practice if you wish to be a designer !!! However, the effort is worth it so keep going
