On this page, you'll find some ideas for improving the look of your garden. We'll be establishing some general principles, rather than diving into the detail. Here are some steps to take.

  • Walk around your local area, looking at gardens, and getting ideas. In time, you'll be able to spot those whose owners have injected some design thought. Decide which ones you like, and assess what you like about them.
  • Read newspaper and magazine articles to gather ideas.
  • Read books on garden design.
  • Visit nurseries, DIY stores or garden centres. The products on display, such as trellis or containers, will give you ideas.
  • Decide what you like and dislike about your garden. Work out what's missing.
  • Think about what your needs: security, privacy, relaxation, and shade.
  • Reflect on the users of the garden: adults, children, pets and wildlife. Think about their special needs.
  • Be cautious about the cost. Make sure you can afford the cost of the plants or the patio.
  • Learn more about garden design by enrolling on a course. You can look for evening classes at your local college, enrol on a full time course, or choose a home-study course (such as the one run by the Institute).
