Make sure you can't see everything at once. That makes for a dull garden.
Make the garden fit the needs of its users. Have places to sit, to play, or to relax.
Divide the garden into different 'rooms'. That makes the garden more interesting.
Try to incorporate sight lines. As you step out out of the back door, where does your eye travel to? Is there a statue or an eye catching bush in the middle distance. Is there a path that curves away?
Ensure unity. Go for a particular colour scheme. Don't add plants unless they match or contrast with your existing plants.
Think about perspective. Have plants of varying height, and lead the eye away to the distance (an attractive view, perhaps).
Texture is just as important as colour. Some trees and plants have interesting texture and shape.
Think about the style. Do you want a formal or relaxed garden, one that is rural or urban, or one that is modern or period style?
