Garden Design Course

Welcome to our Tutors

Our tutors are a talented and friendly bunch of people who enjoy helping our learners develop their skills.

Tracy Foster

Tracy is a professional garden designer working in the North of England.

She studied plant biology at the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne after leaving school and then worked with computers for several years before retraining to be a garden designer.

She's been busy designing gardens ever since, working closely with landscapers as the gardens are being constructed and usually returning to do the planting when the designs have been made a reality.

In addition to 'real' gardens, Tracy has also created gardens at RHS shows and has won five medals including a gold medal at the Chelsea Flower Show in 2012.

David Loder

David started his own business in 1970. Since then he has continued working in garden design.

His work involves not just private commissions, but also consultancy and management for large gardens, commercial projects, planning proposals and delivering training and advice in many horticultural and environmental issues.

David is a member of the National Trust, Devon Association of Smallholders, and the RHS, for whom he is an examiner. He is also a committee member of the Professional Horticulture Group South West.

Craig McGibbon

Craig is the owner and director of an award winning Garden Design and Landscaping Company based in Hertfordshire.

Back in 2004, during an interview with a consultancy house Craig was asked ‘Why do you want to work for us?’ At which point Craig realised that he didn’t! What he wanted to do was continue building the wooden deck he was constructing for a friend. Craig turned the job offer down and started his own business that same year.

Craig ensures that he consults directly with clients; determining their requirements, surveying, designing and landscaping their gardens. He also manages the business including marketing, HR, accountancy and all the other responsibilities that come with owning a business.

Craig employs several landscapers, all of whom he has trained himself. Craig ensures that he isn’t sitting in an office all day; generally you can find him on site, on his knees in the dirt constructing.

Kathryn Upton

Kathryn, who lives in Newcastle upon Tyne with her son and two dogs, studied with the Blackford Centre, and on completion of her course successfully launched Cedar Garden Design.

During her time designing gardens Kathryn has designed a number of bespoke gardens including community, sensory and centenary projects, often in partnership with local community and voluntary groups. Kathryn gets a huge degree of satisfaction from seeing my planting plans become a reality and seeing a bare space transform in to a beautiful, colourful border reflecting the ever changing seasons throughout the year.

When not busy designing gardens and landscapes, Kathryn likes to keep fit by walking her dogs in the country and reading crime novels.

Please note: we’re unable to allocate you a specific tutor, because it depends on the availability of tutors on the date you register on the course.
